Perfecto Apprenticeship Program

Perfecto Apprenticeship Program

Perfecto Tool & Engineering in Anderson, Indiana served the die casting industry when it opened in the 1950s and has since evolved to provide a variety of services to its customers, including details, special machines, and engineering services. The shop has 17 Hurco CNC machines and relies almost entirely on the Hurco conversational control for programming.

The Perfecto shop floor is split into two sections: on the west side you’ll find “the best in the field” working on specialty machining, and then there’s the east side which is considered “a learning ground” where apprentices earn their stripes making simpler parts.

This program is cutting away at a big, complex program: the labor shortage. Through their apprenticeship program, Perfecto is not only aiding the job shops who struggle to find qualified workers, but also young men and women whose skillsets and interests align best with manufacturing.

Perfecto Excels with Hurco Control

Perfecto Tool & Engineering in Anderson, Indiana served the die casting industry when it opened in the 1950s and has since evolved to provide a variety of services to its customers including details, special machines, and engineering services.

Perfecto has 17 Hurco CNC machines and relies almost entirely on the Hurco conversational control for programming. Manager Seth Cartright estimated that it takes about 30% of the time to program conversationally on the Hurco control compared to NC programming. Cartright also highlighted the utility of the graphics screen and ability to program everything right there at the machine. All in all, the ease of the control and reliability of the mills/lathes allows Perfecto machinists to run parts on multiple machines at once.

"It's a homerun because you can really check that program out, hit the start button, and walk away from it, and understand that it's going to do exactly what you want it to do," explained Cartright.

WFL III Drums Up Success with Hurco CNC Mill

WFL III Drums Up Success with Hurco CNC Mill

WFL III Drums used Hurco CNC mill machines to fine tune their business, increasing efficiency and productivity.

William Ludwig III, founder of WFL III Drums, was destined to start his own drum company. He comes from a line of drum-makers/manufacturers that began with his grandfather, William Ludwig Senior.

Ludwig III opened WFL III Drums in 2016, and like any business, there were growing pains. It took about two days for a drum-maker to properly drill holes in the drum shell by hand. Adamant that WFL III needed to increase efficiency by automating its process, Ludwig III tasked his drum-maker with finding the right machine for the job.

His employee’s research led him to Hurco. They discovered Gage Machine Tool, a Hurco distributor in the Kansas City area who opened Ludwig III’s eyes to what his business could accomplish with the power of Hurco’s conversational control.

With no experience in CNC machining or programming, WFL III went from having its team measure, mark and drill drum shells by hand, to running the entire operation through a Hurco VMX42i 3-axis mill thanks to its intuitive control.

With a more efficient system in place, WFL III was able to exponentially increase its productivity.

“Makes all the difference in the world,” exclaimed Ludwig III.

Hurco Practical Job Shop Automation | Oakridge Fab

Hurco Practical Job Shop Automation | Oakridge Fab
Oakridge Fabrication in Minnesota is a job shop that is known for embracing the latest technology and processes available to guarantee quality parts and cost-effective pricing. The shop embraced automation but knew the importance of selecting the right system after conversations with people who had been unsuccessful with automation due to the complexity and inflexibility of traditional automation. Bob Timm, co-owner of Oakridge Fabrication, said he remembers one particularly skeptical response when he said he was adding automation to increase his shop’s efficiency: “…the guy actually said, ‘We’ve got three of them things sitting over here in the corner,’ and I got the feeling he was thinking I don’t think this is going to work out the way you think it is.” Bob Timm knew Oakridge Fabrication needed a cobot that was designed to interface with their equipment, he needed something he could roll out fast with everything included, hook it up, and run it right away.
Oakridge Fabrication chose Hurco’s Practical Job Shop Automation option powered by ProCobots. Bob Timm said everything was hooked up and running in a day and within two days, his machinists were trained and changing programs. The power of Hurco’s Practical Job Shop Automation package is the complete integration between the cobot and the Hurco control, which empowers the machinists to control the automation because they program everything on the Hurco control. “The interface is so nice. It’s up on the screen and you can see everything that’s going on and without that [the programming interface on the control] I think we would have failed. I think we would have ended up with them sitting in the corner like everyone else,” said Bob Timm. If you run a Hurco CNC machine and want to immediately increase your machine utilization and your shop’s overall productivity, check out Practical Job Shop Automation for high-mix manufacturing. The Hurco automation package is easy to program, designed for the continuous changeover, is deployed quickly since it’s already integrated with the Hurco control, and is backed by HURCO

Using the Skew Probing Cycle on Your Hurco CNC Mill

In this training video, we will show you how to use the Skew Probing Cycle on your Hurco CNC mill.

Instructions:
1. INPUT Key
2. PART SETUP Softkey
3. PART PROBING Softkey
4. You will need to find your part zero first, so you will want to select PART ZERO PROBE CYCLES Softkey
5. You can use any of these cycles listed on the screen, but for demonstration purposes we are going to select the PLANE INTERSECTION softkey
6. Once you are at this screen you will need to tell the control which direction in X and Y you want to move, as well as the distance between probe touches.
7. You will then select START PROBING CYCLE and press the CYCLE START button
8. Once you have your part zero set you will want to move onto your skew cycles. So you will need to EXIT the probing screen and select PROBE SKEW CYCLES Softkey
9. On this screen you will see that we have quite a few options for skew cycles. For demonstration purposes we are going to select TWO POINT EDGE
10. For this particular cycle you will have to move your probe into the starting position using the handwheel.
11. You will then tell the control which direction you would like the probe to move (+ or -) for the second touch to contact the part, then input the offset between the two probe touches.
12. Press the START PROBING CYCLE softkey and CYCLE START
13. In this example you can see that the probe will make its first bump, then it will move 8” which is the offset we set for our probe for its second touch.
14. Your skew angle results will appear in the results screen, press YES to accept them.
15. For future reference, you can also find view your current skew angle in the PART SETUP screen.
