“I only have two hands. I needed a tool changer machine so I could be doing other things while the parts were being made. Hurco’s VM1 was the perfect choice.”
– Peter Madison
Hurco is the perfect solution for the small shop
Madison Machining is a small, one-man machine shop located in a new light industrial park in Pinellas Park, Florida. It was started in January 2003 by Peter Madison, an immigrant from Croatia who has been in the United States since 1986.
After spending his time learning the business, he decided to start his own shop. He has a manual mill, manual lathe and 3-axis knee mill. Hurco’s VM1 machining center is his major CNC machine tool.
Key Hurco advantage: Best features, best value
Peter is both the owner and operator, so he has to do everything from purchasing to programming to machining the parts and finally shipping them. When he started his business, he found that his knee mill could get him prototype work, but he couldn’t get the production run without a machining center. He needed to be able to work on other projects while parts were being made.
After looking at all the competitors, Peter felt Hurco’s VM1 machining center was the best choice. It had the best feature set for the price and offered true shop floor programming with its Hurco control.
Peter finds the VM1’s table coupled with Hurco vises ideal for multi-setups. When all four sides are processed in a progression, the cycle time is about 12 minutes. That allows Peter to do other important things in running his business – such as working with customers, programming other parts or running another machine.
Summary
Peter is the first one to tell you that Hurco’s VM1 is the difference between scraping by with semi-manual equipment and being profitable with the work available in his area.
He can serve his customers’ needs and generate the revenues needed to build his own business. Although he started his shop in the midst of the worst downturn in manufacturing in the last 30 years, Peter’s confidence is in his skills and the ability of Hurco’s VM1 to multiply those skills. He hasn’t been let down.
